STRUCTURE FIRE 05-04-10 PDF Print E-mail

Southampton Fire Department Chief Roy “Buddy” Wines IV was in Bridgehampton Tuesday morning when he got the call that there was a structure fire on Pond Lane in Southampton Village.

Though several miles away from the village, Chief Wines said that when he took a step outside to head to the call, he easily spotted the smoke plume coming from Pond Lane.

“As soon as I saw the smoke, I called mutual aid immediately,” the chief said.

He called in North Sea, Hampton Bays and Bridgehampton fire departments for assistance.

The call came in at 9:23 a.m. and the fire was under control within 20 to 30 minutes, according to Chief Wines. He said that when he arrived at 218 Pond Lane, the garage was burning and flames were creeping up to the living space on the second floor. He credited the first team that attacked the fire with saving the structure.

No injuries were reported.

Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance responded to the scene and set up a rehab station to screen the blood pressure and respiration of firefighters who had been inside the burning building.
